An individual who claims to be the mysterious creator of Bitcoin, known as Satoshi Nakamoto, has decided to withdraw his lawsuit against Bitcoin developers. According to a recent statement by the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, Craig Wright, who has long asserted that he is Satoshi Nakamoto, has chosen to drop his case against the 12 Bitcoin developers and other individuals he had sued in the United Kingdom. In a ruling last month, a judge concluded that there is substantial evidence proving that Wright is not the real Satoshi Nakamoto, nor is he the author of the Bitcoin White Paper, which is the foundational document of the digital currency. This ruling cleared the path for Wright to abandon his current legal action.
In the words of the Bitcoin Legal Defense Fund, “Wright’s decision to discontinue his lawsuit brings an end to a nearly decade-long campaign of harassment and intimidation, and represents a significant victory for the Bitcoin developers and open source software in general.” Wright’s withdrawal of the lawsuit follows on the heels of a triumph for the Bitcoin developers in a related case, known as the “Identity Trial,” which was filed against Wright in the UK with the aim of definitively proving that he is not Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin.
Wright initially filed his lawsuit against the Bitcoin developers in 2021 through his trading firm, Tulip Trading. The case challenging Wright’s identity was brought by the Cryptocurrency Open Patent Alliance (COPA), a non-profit organization advocating for the crypto industry. COPA released a statement after the judge’s ruling, asserting that Wright can no longer assert ownership over the cryptocurrency by intimidating the BTC community.
As COPA stated at the time, “This ruling is a victory for developers, the entire open source community, and the truth. For over eight years, Dr. Wright and his financial supporters have spread falsehoods about his identity as Satoshi Nakamoto and utilized those falsehoods to bully and intimidate developers within the Bitcoin community. Today, that comes to an end with the court’s determination that Craig Wright is not Satoshi Nakamoto.”
