The High Court of the United Kingdom has ordered a freeze on the assets belonging to Craig Wright, a computer scientist and entrepreneur, as revealed by recent legal documents.
The court granted a worldwide freezing order (WFO) following a petition from podcaster Peter McCormack, aimed at recovering legal expenses incurred during Wright’s defamation lawsuit against him.
McCormack informed his 543,000 social media followers on X platform that the order has frozen approximately £1.54 million ($1.9 million) worth of Wright’s assets, potentially aiding in the reimbursement of his legal costs.
Justice James Mellor, in his ruling, stated, “Wright exploited defamation laws … to silence those who disputed Dr. Wright’s claims of being Satoshi or questioned his assertions… I am fully convinced that Mr. McCormack has a strong case for recovering costs amounting to £1.548 million.”
Wright has long asserted himself to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the pseudonymous creator of Bitcoin. However, a judge concluded in March that substantial evidence exists proving Wright is not Satoshi, nor did he create the Bitcoin (BTC) white paper, the foundational document for the digital currency.
Wright had initiated a libel suit against McCormack, host of the What Bitcoin Did podcast, after McCormack publicly labeled Wright a “fraud” for challenging Wright’s claims of being Satoshi Nakamoto.
