Google has been slapped with an astronomical fine by a Russian court for blocking a group of television channels on YouTube. The court has imposed a 2 undecillion ruble fine, equivalent to about $20 decillion USD, in response to Google’s blocking of accounts belonging to pro-Russia and state-run media outlets. This news comes from Russia-based media outlet RBC.
The legal action against Google was initiated by Russian media firms, who sued the tech giant after it reportedly blocked the channels for violating sanctions legislation and trade rules. Initially, the courts ordered Google to pay a fine of 100,000 rubles. However, this penalty has doubled every week that the channels remain blocked.
To put the magnitude of the fine into perspective, an “undecillion” is an incredibly large number, consisting of 1 followed by 36 zeros. Meanwhile, a “decillion” is a number with 1 followed by 33 zeros. In simpler terms, the $20 decillion fine translates to a mind-boggling twenty-thousand-billion-billion-billion dollars.
It is worth noting that Google’s parent company, Alphabet, reported a net profit of $73.8 billion for the fiscal year 2023, up from $60 billion in 2022.
