Report US House Officials Call on President Biden to Release Binance Employee Detained in Nigeria

US lawmakers are calling on the White House to intervene and assist a Binance employee who has been detained in Nigeria since February.

Tigran Gambaryan, the Head of Financial Crime Compliance at Binance, was arrested in Nigeria after arriving for meetings with government officials to discuss compliance issues related to the exchange. In March, the Nigerian government leveled charges against Binance, Gambaryan, and another executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, alleging that the world’s largest crypto exchange is responsible for the devaluation of the Naira, the local currency.

In a message to US President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Special Presidential Envoy Roger Carstens, House Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-TX), Representative Rich McCormick (R-GA), and fourteen other Republican representatives stated that Gambaryan is being unjustly detained by a foreign government.

The lawmakers emphasized that the charges against Gambaryan are unfounded and are being used as a coercive tactic by the Nigerian government to pressure Binance. They expressed concern about Gambaryan’s treatment in detention, especially after he contracted malaria in prison.

Despite his request for medical treatment, Gambaryan was initially denied help by prison officials. It was only when he collapsed in court that he was finally taken to a private hospital for care. However, as of June 4, the prison has not fully complied with the court order to ensure Gambaryan receives adequate healthcare.

The legislators are urging for Gambaryan’s case to be transferred to the Office of the Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs, which specializes in securing the release of Americans wrongfully detained abroad. They stressed the urgency of the situation, fearing for Gambaryan’s health and safety.
